Jicarilla Apache refers to the members of the Jicarilla Apache Nation currently living in New Mexico and speaking a Southern Athabaskan term jicarilla, pronounced "hick-ah-REE-uh",  comes from Mexican Spanish meaning "little basket." Their autonym is Tinde or Dinde, meaning "the People."  To neighboring Apache bands like the Mescalero and Lipan they were known as Kinya . The Navajo, who also speak an Athabascan language, were once part of the Western Apache; other groups E of the Rio Grande along the mountains were the Jicarilla, the Lipan, and the Mescalero groups. In W New Mexico and Arizona were the Western Apache, including the Chiricahua, the Coyotero, and the White Mountain Apache.
